In 1983, North Carolina State University won the Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, and their point guard can do more than shoot hoops. Since his playing days, Dereck Whittenburg has founded the Dereck Whittenburg Foundation for Education and continues his career at NC State as an assistant coach for their basketball program. He loves his community in Raleigh and does everything he can to benefit it, including hosting an annual charity golf event he puts on at the college’s golf course.
Capital Ford of Raleigh North Carolina partnered with the Dereck Whittenburg Foundation for Education to sponsor the charity golf event, which raises money for local schools in the area. Capital Ford has worked with Dereck for years and generously sponsored a Brand-New Ford Mustang as a Hole in One Prize. Dereck and Jerry Mosley, the General Manager at Capital Ford, have been associates since Jerry sold Dereck his first car back in 1978, which made Capital Ford an easy choice for a Hole in One Prize sponsor.

Dereck Whittenburg and company have been putting on this very golf event for three years at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course and will continue to do so especially after the successful afternoon they had. Dereck described the day as “a beautiful day to golf.” His foursome included of his brother Steven, councilwomen Mary Ann Baldwin, and long-time friend Gerald Lewis. Dereck elected to hit first, and his shot on the second hole was “hit well and sky high”, recalls Dereck. He went on to explain, “it took a couple bounces and then everyone started cheering! That’s when I knew I sunk it”.
Jerry Mosley jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this golf outing and was ecstatic when he saw they had a winner who was also a customer and an NC State alumnus. Dereck said the dealership was a pleasure to work with and would recommend them to anyone in the area. Dereck has had countless memories on the NC State Campus, and this will certainly be another cherished one thanks to Capital Ford and the Ford Hole in One Program.
